The huge popularity of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on the Indian subcontinent is unquestionably due to his powerful, versatile voice, his imaginative melodic and rhythmic sense, and his ability to communicate both great force and great tranquillity in his music. Most importantly, his music is devoted to a spiritual message: that of the qawwal's passion for God, for the Prophet Mohammed, and for all those in the long line of Sufi masters who have made it possible for him to come a little closer to divinity.
On this, the final volume in a five-CD series documenting a live 1988 Paris concert, we hear the pious authority of Nusrat's singing. Joined by a chorus of nine singers and his brother Farrukh, Nusrat performs three devotional pieces. This CD notably includes an English translation of the songs, allowing the listener to better comprehend the beauty of this ritualistic music.
