This well-selected compilation culls eight tracks, some of them quite lengthy ("Tilak Shyam," for example, clocks in at nearly 24 minutes), from Ravi Shankar's four-disc box set IN CELEBRATION. Listeners seeking a program of classical Indian ragas may want to look elsewhere in Shankar's discography, because producer George Harrison (much to his credit) has included some of Shankar's musical experiments on this collection, proving the sitar guru as dedicated to exploration and innovation in world music as he is to the traditions of his native land.

Shankar's collaboration with the Andre Previn-led London Symphony Orchestra, for example, is represented by two tracks, with the orchestra adding great texture and dynamic variation to Shankar's sitar sound. The startling "West Eats Meat" has Shankar working with a jazz bassist to create an improvisation with shouted-out absurdist non-sequiturs in Bengali. "I Am Missing You" is a pop-oriented tune, with a romantic female-vocal lead, and instrumentation that includes cello, flute, and mandolin. There is plenty of classical Indian fare to balance things out, as well (the opener, "Dhun Kafi," in particular), making IN CELEBRATION: HIGHLIGHTS a concise and economical alternative to the box set, and a glorious introduction to a musical master.
