In Between Now And Then (CD)

A triumph of word-of-mouth enthusiasm over an official marketing plan, O.A.R. (Of a Revolution) has become one of the most popular U.S. live acts of the 2000s. They started out as just another roots-and-reggae-loving campus band in the mid-'90s, but used every opportunity they could to play live. They encouraged fans to bootleg their shows and soon became a part of a larger network of preppy/hippie jam bands that traveled the country, playing for huge audiences. Their exposure grew when they penned and performed the theme song to the hit TV show EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION. They signed to a major label in 2003, and by 2006, it was reported that they had sold over a million records in their relatively brief grassroots career.

Like the group to whom they're most often compared (the Dave Matthews Band), Ohio-based O.A.R. (it stands for Of A Revolution) built up their audience the old-fashioned way, in a grass-roots manner one show at a time. With their fusion of reggae, folk-rock, and funk, they got together at just the right time (the late '90s) to hit it big with the jam-band crowd, but in fact IN BETWEEN NOW & THEN places O.A.R. closer to the likes of Counting Crows and Hootie & the Blowfish than, say, String Cheese Incident or any of a jillion Phish offshoots. While they display plenty of facility on their instruments and a willing ease with switching up the groove, the band focuses on straightforward pop-song structures framed by firm melodic hooks and populated with intelligent, substantive lyrics. Even when they get expansive on a longer track like "Whose Chariot?" they still have enough production savvy to keep things interesting throughout.
