Review

Entertainment Weekly (11/5/99, p.83) - "...65-year-old Thorton returns - triumphantly....Her bluesy contralto on standards...gives hopeful lyrics an edge of lived-through-it-all heartbreak, while originals...swing with the nothing-to-lose abandon of a true jazz artist." - Rating: A-
JazzTimes (1-2/00, pp.104-5) - "...[Her] darkly deep contralto delivers [these] ballads beautifully..."

Title Note

Personnel: Teri Thornton (vocals, piano); Jerome Richardson (alto saxophone, flute, bass flute); Howard Johnson (baritone saxophone, cornet, tuba, clarinet); Dave Bargeron (trombone); Ray Chew, Norman Simmons (piano); Lonnie Plaxico, Michael Bowie (bass); J.T. Lewis, Grady Tate (drums).

Recorded at RPM Studios, New York, New York on June 22 & 24, 1997. Includes liner notes by Teri Thornton and Suzi Reynolds.

Vocalist Teri Thorton's voice has the distinct quality of a rich Burgundy wine that has been aged to perfection. Its dusky tint, coupled with Thorton's natural supple musicality makes for some fine listening on the very delightful I'LL BE EASY TO FIND. Like Abbey Lincoln or Carmen McRae before her, Thorton finds her own unique groove within the music and brings out every ounce of spirit in her performance.

Supported by such luminous veterans as Jerome Richardson, Howard Johnson, and Grady Tate, Thorton offers sonorous interpretations of classics like Gershwin's "It Ain't Necessarily So," taken here at a quick pace, and a creatively arranged "Nature Boy." The singer's own compositions like "Knee Deep in the Blues" and the funky "Feels Good" show her exceptional range of styles and spirited soul. In particular, the smoky standard "I'll Be Seeing You" offers a heartfelt longing that exhibits Thornton's singular emotional depth. This only touches the surface of this vocalist's abilities and, as the album's title suggests, finding her is not only easy, but also well worth the search.
