Hawthorne Heights Artist Snapshot:

Injecting the driving emo-punk of The Promise Ring with just a touch of metal grandeur, Dayton, Ohio's Hawthorne Heights forged its own ground in an already crowded `00s scene. THE SILENCE IN BLACK AND WHITE, the band's 2004 debut, became one of hardcore-icon Victory Records' biggest selling records. In a unique vocal assault, the group employed two vocalists, with dulcet-toned JT Woodruff handling the main vocals and Casey Calvert's guttural screams joining in on the chorus. A bizarre staged battle with rapper Ne-Yo over sales of Hawthorne Heights' second record led to the band's breaking ties with Victory in 2007. That same year, tragedy struck, as Calvert was found dead in his tour bus, markedly changing the band's sound.

Review

Rolling Stone (p.92) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Hawthorne Heights up the drama-punk ante, channeling tricky rhythms, shimmery soft parts and a metal-schooled three-ax attack into songs that are both action-packed and gratuitously stylized."
Entertainment Weekly (p.99) - "JT Woodruff's hypersensitive crooning is swoonworthy..." -- Grade: B-

Title Note

This 2006 sophomore album by emo band Hawthone Heights makes good on the promise of their highly successful debut by showing the band pushing at their limits to write better songs and broaden their stylistic palette. Yet the hardcore-influenced aggression is still here, as is the emotional angst, ensuring that the band won't lose any of their core following. On top of all this, the band has a way with a hummable tune, spinning punk-pop one minute and melancholic drama the next.
