Sidestepping the reductive, austere approach of their German electro brethren, Digitalism--the duo of Jens Moelle and Ismail Tuefekci--take a more maximalist approach to house-flavored dance-rock. Their debut album, IDEALISM, couples French-touch filter house with brutalist synth textures--albeit of a decidedly melodic sensibility. Occasionally, the hamfisted DJ-driven arrangements cohere into genuine songs, as on the driving, melodic "Pogo"--a gorgeous slice of New Order-esque dance pop. Melding layers of rock distortion and raw dance beats with flawless pop melodies, IDEALISM--like Daft Punk's HOMEWORK--will likely inspire a new generation of sequencer-toting remix jockeys.
