The eponymous debut album from R&B quartet Ideal stands apart from the pack. One reason for this is the group's unusual harmonic sophistication. Jazzy keyboards, Stevie Wonder-ish melodic turns, and a sophisticated, highly textured approach to arrangement serve to immediately distinguish Ideal from the teeming R&B masses. Naturally, another key to the group's sound is its vocals. PZ, J-Dante, Maverick, and Swab are equally adept at complex, Take 6-style harmonies, R. Kelly-esque love-man rhapsody/melisma, and a particularly unique, hip-hop-informed phrasing style that complements their jazzier harmonies with its off-the-beat rhythms. As with any self-respecting R&B outfit, the predominant song subject is amour, but Ideal brings enough fresh sounds to the table to keep those potentially time-worn topics from sounding stale.
