Publisher's note

Christmas is coming, and one little girl wants nothing more than a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy. But will Santa Claus and her parents make her Christmas wish come true? As shown in his best-selling titles The Night Before Christmas and Here Comes Santa Claus, no one can portray the holidays better than Bruce Whatley; and he doesit again with I Want a Hippopotamus For Christmas.

The song "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" was written in 1950 by John Rox and became a nationwide hit in 1953 when ten-year-old Oklahoma native Gayla Peevey sang the song as a way to raise money for the Oklahoma City Zoo's first hippopotamus. In December of that year the city received Matilda the hippo for Christmas.

Annotation

Based on a 1953 song used to raise funds for Matilda, the first hippo at the Oklahoma City Zoo, this fanciful picture book is dominated by images of a delighted, lilac-colored hippo and her delirious, pink-footie-PJ-clad owner. With blue eyes shining and an imagination running wild, a little girl eschews Tinkertoys, crocodiles, even kangaroos, and invokes the spirit of Christmas with her gigantic wish. She is certain that her giant vegetarian pet will fit through the front door with a little pushing by Santa. She just has to convince her despairing parents that the two are meant for each other. Accompanied by Bruce Whatley's buoyant, enthusiast watercolors, as well as music and lyrics.
