Shirley Horn Artist Snapshot:

Despite the encouragement of Miles Davis and Quincy Jones early in her career, jazz pianist and singer Shirley Horn stuck around the Washington, D.C., area and raised a family, playing the local clubs all throughout the '70s. In the early-`80's however, Horn was recorded first by the European SteepleChase label, then by Verve, and her career finally began to take off. Horn's graceful keyboard style is class personified, and ballads are her vocal specialty. She eventually received seven Grammy nominations, won an award for the Davis tribute I REMEMBER MILES, and was inducted into the Lionel Hampton Hall of Fame in 1996. Despite being ill with diabetes in later years, Horn performed and recorded until her death in 2005.

Title Note

Personnel: Shirley Horn (vocals, piano); Charles Ables (bass); Steve Williams

(drums).

Producers: Miriam Cutler, David Kreisberg, Ron Berinstein.

Recorded live at Vine ST Bar & Grill, Hollywood, California on May 12-13, 1987.

When Shirley Horn recorded I THOUGHT ABOUT YOU LIVE AT VINE STREET in Los Angeles with her trio for Verve records in 1987, she was already very much a jazz cult figure whose work was highly esteemed by other artists including Miles Davis. Her first release for Verve Records, which also proved to be her first commercial breakthrough, is quite simply a wonderful recording.

Horn's choice of material is always compelling and chosen with exquisite taste. Her sultry and smoky vocals are extremely intimate and conversational. The show-stopping version of the haunting Italian ballad "Estate (Summer)" which she recorded three times but premiered here, is an extreme example of her slowed down manipulation of time, and is nothing less than thrilling.
