Idina Menzel, a Tony Award Winning Broadway Star for Rent in 1996 and another
for Wicked in 2004 (and recently seen on screen in Enchanted), has made the leap
from Broadway to music, which very few Broadway stars are able to do. Producer
and songwriter Glen Ballard, who worked with rock and pop ranging from the Goo
Goo Dolls and Shakira to Dave Matthews and Annie Lennox and of course, Alanis
Morrissette co-wrote many of the songs with Menzel and help produce an excellant
album.
Idina is a terrific singer, and I was amazed by the ranges she can go
with her voice. The music sounds genuine and like it comes from experience. Her
talent is obvious and she definitely set some high standards for herself and
others to follow. Her Broadway skills helped her show a classic side for this
album.
‘I Stand’ marks Menzel’s third solo album and features some of the
power ballads that you’d expect from the musicals that she’s been in. Menzel is
bold, brassy and has a powerful voice with wide ranges to her notes. She has the
ability to sound soft and sweet on one track and intense and emotional on the
next. The album talks about hope, faith, love, and loss, and sounds like any one
of the numbers could have been from a Broadway show.
One of the better songs
on the album is “Gorgeous,” a love song. "Where Do I Begin" is a touching love
song, to which Menzel has admitted writing about husband Taye Diggs.
I Stand,"
which is another tune about believing in oneself, and "Better to Have Loved"
talks of pain and loss. "Brave," encourages listeners to have bravery and helps
overcome lifes troubles with phrases like, "I might be afraid/But its my turn
to be brave."
Menzels earlier work was raw, and had a strong acoustic sound
on her first two albums. Therefore, you are in for a treat with "I Stand" It is
full of instruments and backup singers that lend a hand in making this one of
her best albums. This album is recommended for all sorts of listeners and ages.

"I Stand," is a wonderful album. With heartfelt statements like, “When all of
the madness falls like rain (The song ‘Gorgeous’),” “ Where do I begin my
love/Starting with the things I haven’t said enough of (‘Where Do I Begin’),”
and, my personal favorite, “If this is the moment I stand here on my own/ If
this is the right of passage that somehow leads me home/I might be afraid but
it’s my turn to be brave (From the single ‘Brave’).” enjoys a beautiful voice,
this album is a gift! From start to end, the album is a showcase of Menzel’s
talent as a true songstress.

On this her third solo album, Idina Menzels "I Stand" is able to seamlessly
combine her impeccable stage voice and presence into a pop CD. Best known for
her roles in the Broadway musicals "Rent" and "Wicked", this Tony award winning
actress is able to prove that she is able to sing pop tunes with the grace and
class that she brings to show tunes.
The CD has exactly what you would
expect from Idina: strong vocals that demonstrate her range both musically and
stylistically. For the most part, the songs speak of empowerment and hope. "I
Stand" is a classic pop ode to the things we find important and make us unique.
"Gorgeous" has a catchy Latin vibe and show cases Idinas unbelievable voice.
"Enemy" is a song about self sabotage that has a surprisingly edgy sound to both
the vocals and the accompaniment.
This CD is great for anyone that
appreciates true talent. It does not have all the electronically added vocals
heard with most of the pop CDs on the charts today. It doesnt have lyrics that
are explicit or seductive. It has melody. It has dynamics. It has true vocal
talent with no need for dubbing or distractions. It has Idina.

Idina Menzel, "I Stand" is filled with great pop friendly songs and light, heart
felt ballads. The Tony Award Winning actress/singer/songwriter does no
dissappoint in this showing.
