Review

Q (5/00, pp.131-2) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Rundgren's finest material....You want great adult pop? This is how it's done."

Title Note

Personnel: Todd Rundgren (vocals, guitar, keyboards).

Liner Note Author: Julee Stover.

Photographer: Michael Ochs.

As somebody who would happily jettison his Beatles albums as long as he could keep his favorite Rundgren albums (although you'd still have to fight me for Ram), it's hard not to listen to the budget-line 1997 collection I Saw the Light and Other Hits and not be just a little conflicted. On one hand, it's hard not to be the didactic purist and scream, "Where is 'Zen Archer'?," "Where is 'Long Flowing Robe'?," "Where is 'Couldn't I Just Tell You'?," or, if we're going to include Utopia (which we apparently are), "Where is 'Feets Don't Fail Me Now'?" Then, as the collection plays, it's hard not to love all of these ten tracks, with the notable exception of the Faithful Beach Boys cover "Good Vibration" (good, but not nearly as good as the sublime "Love of the Common Man," another song that could have been here). And, perhaps for those not as committed as me, or other Todd-heads (which there are certainly people more dedicated than myself), that's enough, since it does have almost all of the hits -- without such latter-day AOR favorites as "The Want of a Nail" -- on a fun, affordable collection. And it sounds as good as an illogical mix tape could, too, which means, fans, not only does it deliver the hits, it's fun for those dedicated didactics like me -- even if it just makes us want to haul out Runt, Ballad, and Something/Anything?. Actually, if you wind up loving this and want to hear more, that's exactly what you should do -- go out and get those three albums and discover how deep Rundgren's genius truly runs. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
