Singer Phyllis Hyman cut an imposing figure on the concert stage--from swinging jazz interpretations, to funky R&B and sultry balladry, she was truly a diva for all seasons. Brought up in Pittsburgh, she came of age professionally on the Florida music scene, and was a popular figure among jazz cognoscenti in New York whe she made her breakthrough in the Broadway production of Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Ladies."

That personal demons should afflict an artist who seemingly had it all is not an uncommon tale on the American scene. And so it comes to pass that Miss Phyllis Hyman reaches out to her fans one last time on I REFUSE TO BE LONELY, a selection of songs that offer poignant hints at the turbulent ebb and flow beneath her glamorous visage. It is a lush, powerful recital, meant to signal a comeback not a wistful backward glance.

The title tune is an anthem for all women who've ever emerged from a deep relationship only to confront profound solitude, and this theme of loneliness resonates throughout the album. Growling, Hyman descends into her lower register to symbolize the search for closure and emotional distance on "Waiting For The Last Tear To Fall." On "This Too Shall Pass," her voice takes on the vulnerability of a little girl; over a pulsing backbeat, she attempts to reassure herself that she possesses the necessary strength to come through it all. On the remaining selections, a sultry Hyman delves headlong into romanticism. The concluding song is especially touching, as she moves confidently from the confessional through the dramatic, urging us, ironically enough, to "Give Me One More Reason To Stay."
