Long before he became the celebrated composer of the pop opera film THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG and songs like "The Windmills of Your Mind" (featured in both versions of THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR), Michel Legrand was just another jazz-addled young pianist/arranger making his way on the Paris scene. Except that none of the others came up with such a dazzling tour de force as I LOVE PARIS, recorded in 1954 and only available now in this Gold Disc version from Columbia.

I LOVE PARIS is no corny accordion-led tourist travelogue, even though some fine accordion work does figure on a song like "Under the Bridges of Paris." Yes, the album gathers just about every song with Paris in its title in time-honored '50s fashion. But Legrand is such an imaginative and lucid orchestrator of both strings and band that one immediately forgives him the gimmick. And these are all such strong tunes anyway, including such American standards as Cole Porter's title tune, Vernon Duke's "April in Paris" and Jerome Kern's lovely "The Last Time I Saw Paris" as well as French-born chestnuts like "Les Feuilles Mortes (Autumn Leaves)" and "Sous le Ciel De Paris (Under Paris Skies)."
