Now this seemed an unlikely summit meeting-a new wave axeman stamping about the studio with a legendary prog-rock guitar god. Would it surprise anyone to know that Summers and Fripp had been mates and members of their own mutual admiration society for years? Evidence of such rapport fairly leaps out of the tungsten-string lattices of I ADVANCE MASKED, twisted, gnarled, and endlessly fascinating.

Neither Crimson nor Police-like, the elasticity, poise, and interlocking chords of these advancing masks of electric and electronic guitars demonstrate varying degrees of finesse and mystique. MASKED was recorded in the early '80s, and it's easy to discern Fripp's contributions-those prickly, densely woven arpeggios of sound and vision he so favored during Crimson's disciplined time. And Summers, no slouch on the frets himself, tends to set into motion the album's gorgeous atmospheres and curtains of trilling guitar-synth washes. Those washes can interstice with elements of funk, as on the title track or on the Crimson-esque "Stultified," knock on heaven's door ("Girl on a Swing", "Hardy Country"), or illuminate cities built in labyrinthine futures ("China-Yellow Leader"). Fripp and Summers propel their string-driven things into and out of rock's orifice in search of categories as yet undefined.
