Publisher's note

In this teaching fable, Richard Bach explores both flight and metaphysics. In the opening moments of the story, we meet Jamie Forbes, a pilot who guides a woman into landing a plane safely after her husband loses consciousness. She later claims it was like being hypnotized. Richard Bach, in this, his twentieth book, has written a compelling fable about reality and suggestion.

Bach explores deep spiritual and philosophical issues in this slim volume. Our true nature, it seems, is not bound by space and time. We live in a world full of appearances. If we stop accepting them as reality, the book suggests, these appearances will cease to be our reality. We enter this world to explore, to have fun, to learn, and to have shared experiences with the people we care about, but most of all to learn how to love and love again.

Annotation

The beloved author of JONATHAN LIVINGSTON SEAGULL returns with an engaging tale about a flight instructor who discovers that he has been flying on mental autopilot throughout most of his everyday life. Jamie Forbes is in the middle of a flight when he receives a distress call from Maria, the spouse of another pilot, who reports that her husband has collapsed at the controls. Jamie automatically talks her through the landing, and is later surprised to find out that she claims he hypnotized her. This bizarre scenario plunges Jamie into an introspective search for the boundaries of his reality, which lie within the recesses of his mind. As the edges of Jamie's perception gradually dissolve, he realizes that the limits of creation are mental constructions which have evolved in human consciousness, and that each of us has the capability to cross those borders and discover a new frontier of ecstatic fulfillment.
