This disc received the 1999 Cannes Classical Award for Best Song/Vocal Recital - 19th/20th Century.

Although this disc was far from being Matthias Goerne's first, it was the one which brought him firmly into the international spotlight. And with good cause--this 'Winterreise' is at the high end of the quality scale, both among the volumes of Hyperion's Schubert Edition and among recordings of the work.

The performance was captured from what sounds like the perfect seat in a recital hall: there is a refreshing sense of space, but the voice and the piano are near enough to hear without effort. Graham Johnson provides perfect partnership for Goerne's honeyed baritone--more than accompaniment, but never overshadowing the voice. For his part, the singer breathes life and character into M�ller's words and Schubert's music as few have proved able. From the tender farewell to his ex-sweetheart in "Gute Nacht" through to the chilling conclusion of "Der Leiermann," Goerne proves himself to be up to the challenges of this great song cycle.
