After making a couple of albums on a grass-roots level and earning what must have been a shocking amount of acclaim (feted by everyone from John Peel to Elvis Costello), alt-country songbird Laura Cantrell graduated to more high-profile environs with HUMMING BY THE FLOWERED VINE. Coming off like a modern-day Emmylou Harris, Cantrell combines folk, country, and pop roots with a gentle delivery, sensitive accompaniment, and a knack for picking material (when she's not writing her own). Lucinda Williams fans will be tantalized by the presence of a previously unrecorded Williams tune, the loping and longing "Letters." Cantrell's love of old-school country is displayed via a version of Bakersfield country icon Wynn Stewart's "Wishful Thinking." A wealth of talent lends a hand throughout HUMMING, from John Convertino and Joey Burns of Calexico to stalwart Mekon/Waco Brother Steve Goulding, but ultimately it's Cantrell's plaintive voice and engaging sensibilities that carry the day.
