Review

Q (p.97) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he Balkan melancholia of Beirut and Gogol Bordello is not the only trick up the Denver-based four-piece's sleeve: elsewhere they harness the ambitious sweep of Arcade Fire."
Uncut (p.99) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he real ace in their pack is the voice of Nick Urata, a soaring operatic instrument heard to thrilling effect..."
CMJ (p.12) - "[A] work that swells with a haunting desperation and neoclassical grandeur."

Album Review

Called "Everything that music should be," by NPR's All Things Considered, DeVotchKa's third full length "How It Ends" showcases the Denver band's unique sound- a blend of Eastern European, Southwestern, and wholly otherworldly arrangements, which are impossible to define in time or space. Produced by Craig Shumacher, (Calexico, Giant Sand, Evan Dando) "How It Ends" is filled with mournful ballads and aggressive instrumentals-- built with violin, upright bass, guitar, trumpets, piano, theremin and odd percussion. DeVotchKa and their unique sound have drawn comparisons to like-minded peers Calexico, 16 Horsepower, and Bright Eyes. With sold out theatres across America, the band may no longer be the underground's best kept secret. Standard Jewel Case.
