Product note

Freda Payne may have first earned widespread acclaim with hits like "Band of Gold" for Holland/Dozier/Holland's Invictus label, but her story didn't start there. Two years after a 1964 debut on Impulse as a jazz singer, Payne made this album for MGM. HOW DO YOU SAY I DON'T LOVE YOU ANYMORE was produced by Tom Wilson (famed for his work with Bob Dylan), and while it bears a distinctly '60s sound as opposed to the funkier feel of some of her Invictus work, she belts these tunes out with just as much conviction, from "On Easy Street" (sampled by British duo J-Walk for their 2000 hit "Soul Vibration") to a soulful take on the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling."
