When Michelle Branch emerged with her hit debut album in 2001 she was just 17 years old. Having successfully managed the transition into her twenties, she sounds even more confident on the follow-up HOTEL PAPER. This is an album of panoramic pop; even though many of the songs here are based around simple guitar licks and sharp rhythms, most of them burst out into widescreen production by the time the chorus kicks in. "Are You Happy Now?" incorporates a percolating drum-and-bass feel (of the electronica variety) with anthemic rock guitar. Achieving a similar mix-and-match production effect, tricky acoustic guitar licks rub shoulders with snappy drum loops on "Love Me Like That," which features a guest appearance from Sheryl Crow.

HOTEL PAPER is essentially a pop-rock album with some power-ballad tendencies. Nevertheless, the twangy, chugging "Breathe" is not the Faith Hill hit of the same name but could find its way onto a Hill or Shania album with no trouble at all, indicative of the inherent stylistic malleability of Branch's all-purpose songwriting.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, it lacks the charm of her debut but its consistency makes up for its flaws... , November 4, 2007

In 2001, when Michelle Branch first came out with her debut, "The Spirit Room", she sounded like a real teenager. Her lyrics really felt like her age, not so bratty and childish, nor aiming at mature themes she can only experience through imagination. So, two years later, in 2003, we find Ms Branch as a grown-up version of her formal self with this new album to prove shes no fluke. Overall, the disc is good and sometimes brilliant, but compared to her first effort, the brilliance falls short, but not to worry, she still has that flair for good melodies despite missing some hooks. Intro- at first, I was confused on this particular 11-second sound together with the similar sound attached to the last song. The two sound clips sounds like music from the silent films of the 20s and 30s. Now knowing this, Michelles wit can be appreciated. See, because debut albums of singer-songwriters cover more diverse topics becuase most of their debut songs were written long before they were discovered. Now, with Michelle, she used these sounds from the silent films to show that the past 2 years of her life was like a movie. The last 2 years was a chapter of her life concluded in this album. Now, going straight to the main contents of the album, the highlights here are "Are You Happy Now" and "Breathe". These sogs were the singles released and its not hard to see why. The former shows Michelle in a darker mood and heavier guitar hooks and the latter has the sunny pop mood reminiscent of her debut. Then, "Empty Handed" and "Where Are You Now" shows her Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd influences. Then, the twangy country-feel of the collaboration with Sheryl Crow is decent, but gets tiring after a while. Then, the quieter tracks, "One of These Days" and "Hotel Paper" (my personal favorites) sets the mood for a rainy day listen. The former features Michelle on piano (if you watch the enhanced feature, youll be surprised that Michelle wrote the song in 10 minutes while the engineers were mixing the songs, they were so astounded that they insisted to Michelle to include the song in the album), and the latter has a country feel to it. "Hotel Paper" I believe is the most personal song in the album, a clever song about writing songs. Then , the acoustic song "Desperately" tries to recapture the youth-oriented feel of her debut. While many expressed their liking for the song, I believe this is one of the weakest tracks in the album as it blends into oblivion with the other good songs. Also, the breezy tracks of "Find Your Way Back" and "Tuesday Morning", though promising and good for afternoon listen, suffers from that samey sounds-like-the-previous-song syndrome. The last real song, "Til I Get Over You", though contains one of Michelles best vocal performances, tends to be a bit depressing that makes you long for more "Breathe"-like tracks. Then the last track, "Its You" (another one of my personal favorites) sounds like a dying song, but its not scary, it creates a picture of a hospital scene, at least thats what it does to me. Then the album ends with the silent film sound. It is true that there are fewer single potential songs here and the album is drenched with ballads and mellow songs, but its consistency triggers you to listen without skipping a track. It is consistent, yes, but it does not mean that it is a strong effort.
