What can be said about the legendary Armstong Hot Five/Seven recordings that hasn't already been said? One could say these recordings (a band that existed primarily in the studio) are miniature masterworks of small group improvisation, and that all the soloists--especially Armstrong, with his bright tone and brashly inventive and unpredictable cornet playing--are incandescent. The tunes are so earthy and infectious (and so is the spirit driving them), that on the basis of these recordings Armstrong became THE jazz star of the 1920s (before achieving international jazz and pop stardom), that his influence extended to nearly everyone in jazz and pop, directly or indirectly. All these things have indeed been said. All that's left to do is listen to the music (which, aside from the historical significance, is great fun, too).
