Review

JazzTimes (p.68) - "These eight instrumental workouts...are pumped with muscle and stewed in soul, drawing from Afro-Cuban and Memphis rhythmic traditions, classic uptown funk and a modicum of the eccentricity and experimentalism that has always marked Anastasio's work."

Title Note

Personnel: Trey Anastasio (guitar); Dave Grippo (alto saxophone); Peter Apfelbaum (tenor saxophone); Jennifer Hartswick (trumpet); Andy Moroz (trombone); Ray Paczkowski (keyboard); Tony Markellis (bass instrument); Russ Lawton (drums); Cyro Baptista (percussion).

As the guitarist/vocalist for Phish, Trey Anastasio achieved jam-band godhead status, but in the wake of that band's retirement, HORSESHOE CURVE shows that he's capable of much more than hacky-sack background music. An all-instrumental affair, the album shows off Anastasio's guitar mastery in a new context. The Latin percussion and horn section that adorn the tracks are emblematic of Anastasio's move towards a sound that's got as much to do with Afro-Cuban jazz inspiration as Grateful Dead-derived jamfests. That said, things never get so cerebral that Anastasio neglects to add a propulsive groove to the proceedings, so even the most hardcore Phish head should still be able to bop along contentedly to HORSESHOE CURVE.
