Title Note

The available information on Horse Noodles is sketchy, which seems to be the label's intent. Horse Noodles seems to be the stage name (hopefully) of one person, and that person seems to be from California and is most likely in his or her early thirties. Beyond that, you're left on your own with a winning set of lightweight but satisfying electronic dance music -- stuff that's quirky without being really avant-garde, complex without being too frenetic, jazzy without being soporific, funky without being either aggressive or sexy. "Rudy's Got the Number" involves sturdy breakbeats, jazzy horns, and occasional electric piano licks; "Have a Cigar" draws on Cuban elements (get it?) but also incorporates what sounds like backwards saxophone or clarinet; on "Some Lone Range Noodles" you have swelling synth chords juxtaposed with scraping percussion noises, a dubwise bassline, and a lightly chugging drum part. You get the picture. It's easy listening without the ick factor, or maybe dance music without the compulsion. Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
