A document of the Flying Burrito Brothers in the mid 1970s and early '80s--years after founding visionaries Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman departed--HONKY TONK NIGHTS features two live/rarities discs of the band as led by pedal steel ace Sneaky Pete Kleinow, original bassist Chris Etheridge, and fiddler/vocalist Gib Guilbeau. While a mere shadow of the Parsons/Hillman-led band, the version featured here, especially on disc one, smokes as a live band--something that the original line-up could never claim. The band rips through "Why Baby Why," "Wheels," and "White Line Fever" cementing their rep as the class of the California country-rock circuit. The steam runs out a bit by disc two, which focuses on Guilbeau originals. Hearing the late Sneaky Pete's blazing steel solos throughout the collection, however, is worth the price of admission.
