Dirty Linen (p.53) - "Mullins combines rock, pop, and folk as he gives voice to the downtrodden."

Title Note

Personnel: Peter Stroud (electric guitar, resonator guitar); Clay Cook (lap steel guitar, pedal steel guitar, mandolin, piano, Hammond b-3 organ, electric bass); Gerry Hansen (lap steel guitar, drums, percussion, background vocals); Kip Conner (mandolin, percussion, background vocals); Marty Kearns (Wurlitzer piano, Hammond b-3 organ); Patrick Blanchard (electric bass); Francine Reed, Kasey Chambers (background vocals).

Recording information: Creekside Station.

Singer-songwriter Shawn Mullins's second album for the revamped folk-centric indie Vanguard Records continues the rustic sound of 2006's NINTH WARD PICKIN' PARLOR. A collection of story songs like the anti-gun violence protest tune "The Ballad of Kathryn Johnston," character studies like "Homeless Joe" and the meth-addict tales of "Leaving All Your Troubles Behind," and more personal material like "All In My Head" and "See That Train," HONEYDEW captures all of Mullins's musical skills in one 12-song package.

Album Review

Shawn Mullins’ vibrant new album, HONEYDEW is teeming with humanity—hobos, railroad workers, traveling salesmen, homeless troubadours, fearful old people, youngsters yearning to escape from a dead-end existence, and several generations of family members, living and dead. There’s a ton of heartache in this record, and a ton of hope as well, as Mullins explores the dark corners of contemporary existence while also delving back into the past, capturing vivid pictures of his native Atlanta and the surrounding South in a voice of plainspoken eloquence and uncommon genuineness. This richly interwoven, character-driven work is at once the most panoramic album of Mullins’ distinguished career and the most intensely personal. HONEYDEW is the follow-up to Mullin’s Vanguard debut, 9TH WARD PICKIN’ PARLOR.Produced by the artist, the recording took place at Creekside Station, the rural Georgia studio of Gerry Hansen, Mullins’ longtime drummer, who engineered and mixed the record. Other regulars include bassist Patrick Blanchard, multi-instrumentalist Clay Cook, B-3/Wurlitzer specialist Marty Kearns and mandolin player Kip Conner. Mullins managed to snag guitarist Peter Stroud (Sheryl Crow) during a break in his touring schedule. Also making appearances are Atlanta blues and soul legend Francine Reed (Lyle Lovett) on “Homeless Joe” and the extremely catchy first single, “All In My Head,” and Australian alt-country artist Kasey Chambers on “Cabbagetown.”
