Review

Alternative Press (p.188) - "[S]triking, with Kinsella embracing bigger studios while retaining his trademark intimacy....The first empathetic album he's ever made."

Title Note

Owen: Mike Kinsella.

Recording information: 2006.

Drummer, guitarist, and songwriter Mike Kinsella was active in Chicago's indie music scene throughout the 1990s, playing in bands like Cap'n Jazz and American Football. Owen is Kinsella's solo project, and 2006's AT HOME WITH OWEN (appropriately named as the album was recorded in the artist's home studio) continues in the vein of previous Owen releases, delivering quietly melancholic, emo-tinged songs. Subtle electronica backdrops flesh out Kinsella's acoustic guitar and cracked, expressive vocals. And while the lyrics tread familiar territory about heartbreak and self-doubt, they do so in a way that's convincing and, ultimately, winning.

5 out of 5 stars a masterpiece from a man whos had many, May 4, 2009
By Eames
Owen is Mike Kinsella, the Chicago indie luminary (and brother of Tim) whos played in such influential bands such as American Football, Capn Jazz and Joan Of Arc. After a sting of strong full-length and EP releases, At Home With Owen marks his most cohesive and rich-sounding work to date, with his melodic guitar work and heartache-stained vocals complimented by subtle and sparing piano and synth. Owen is a man whos seen and world and has the scars - the honest lyrics avoid cliches and search the range of modern, 20-something feelings: the big city, love, alcohol, work, and play. Standout tracks include One Of These Days, a searing admitance of longing, guilt, and fault, and The Sad Waltzes Of Pietro Crespi, a stunning song which may be Kinsellas most polished and evolved song to date.. a radio gem if radio ever gained the intelligence. Many of the tracks off this album also have videos which suit the moods perfectly, so be sure to hit youtube and check them out.
