Doc Watson Artist Snapshot:

Blind North Carolina guitarist Arthel "Doc" Watson did more than anyone other than Earl Scruggs to popularize the guitar as a lead instrument in bluegrass. Watson's trademark two-fingered flatpicking style is one of the most influential in the genre, and has proven influential to all who followed in his wake. He became a professional musician in the 1950s, and was in the right place at the time for the folk boom of the '60s, which made him a star in roots music circles. For many years, Watson worked in a duo with his son Merle, but the latter was killed in a 1985 farm accident. Doc eventually soldiered on, becoming one of the most respected elder statesmen of bluegrass, earning Grammys and plaudits along the way.

Title Note

Personnel: Doc Watson (vocals, guitar); Merle Watson (guitar); Russ Savakus (acoustic bass).

HOME AGAIN! (1966) was the fourth in Doc Watson's string of fine albums for Vanguard. With his unaffected singing style, dazzling flat-picking guitar technique, and repertoire of traditional songs, Watson is the virtual embodiment of true folk music. While his later albums would incorporate bluegrass, country, and pop material, HOME AGAIN! is strictly old-school folk, with Watson's acoustic performances accompanied here and there by his son Merle on second guitar and Russ Savakus on string bass.

Watson has an uncanny knack for making the most conventional folk standards immediately appealing. The program here includes the whimsical "Froggie Went A-Courtin'," the gentle and sad "Matty Groves," and an a cappella version of "Down in the Valley to Pray." What really astonishes here--even beyond Watson's flawless guitar work--is the sincerity and warmth Watson brings to each song, reminding the listener why these simple, gorgeous tunes have weathered the decades, and why they will continue to last.
