Personnel: Justin Nozuka (vocals, guitars); Damhnait Doyle (vocals); Bill Bell (acoustic guitar, electric slide guitar, ukulele, piano, Hammond b-3 organ, electric bass, hand claps, percussion, programming); Kevin Fox (cello); Pete Cugno (piano); George Koller (electric bass); Davide Direnzo (drums, percussion).

That Justin Nozuka's debut, HOLLY, was released on the British label Outcaste is appropriate. Like labelmates KT Tunstall and Joss Stone, Nozuka melds blues-inflected soul-pop with intense, earnest singer-songwriter fare for a brew that is easy to digest but is emotionally substantive as well. Nozuka's age (he was 18 at the time of HOLLY's release) is sometimes hard to believe, given the maturity and insight of these songs. "Save Him," a tale of domestic abuse, and the lilting "After Tonight" are two standouts on this very promising debut.
