Although Sun Ra's avant-garde music and out-there attire may make some potential listeners wary, not all of the bandleader/keyboardist's work is experimental, cosmic jazz. HOLIDAY FOR SOUL DANCE is a case in point, since it offers up a surprisingly straightforward set of standards. (As with many of Ra's releases, the recording dates of these tunes are the subject of debate, with some arguing 1959-'61 and others claiming '68-'69.)
Ra and his trusty Arkestra open with a lightly swinging rendition of "But Not for Me," which is followed by a slightly more freeform take on "Day by Day." Throughout the album, Ra sticks to piano (rather than electric piano or keyboards), and tenor saxophonist John Gilmore and alto saxophonist Marshall Allen are frequently showcased. (Allen would take over the Arkestra in the '90s after Ra's death.) Fans hoping for otherworldly versions of jazz/pop classics will be disappointed, but those seeking the more accessible side of Ra will find it on HOLIDAY FOR SOUL DANCE.
