Title Note

Personnel includes: Sammy Kershaw (vocals).

It's not just his baritone drawl or his love of bluesy honky-tonk that makes Sammy Kershaw sound like George Jones' Louisiana cousin. There's also a handful of songwriters that the two hard-country singers share. From writers like Larry Bastian and Dennis Linde, Kershaw has grabbed the same blend of upbeat novelties and dark ballads that allows Jones to bounce so freely between humor and sadness. Kershaw adds just a touch of his Cajun heritage, and a sense of rock and roll roots too, reaching a strange culmination on Linde's "Queen Of My Double Wide Trailer," a tongue-in-cheek stomp that he sings as a redneck replica of Prince's "Raspberry Beret."

Kershaw may seem young for a hits collection, but he has already amassed an impressively stylized body of work. "Anywhere But Here" is a rockin' slice of get-me-out-of-here-and-put-me-on-the-road Americana that incorporates the best of Jones, Roger Miller and Steve Earle. And "Your Tattoo," the collection's one new song, is a great bit of Cajun fiddle-laced honky-tonk that ponders the essential question: what do I do with your tattoo, the one that "won't leave me like you did"?

Clinching Kershaw's right to a greatest-hits set are a couple of ballads whose dark imagery captures country's lonesome spirit. On "Yard Sale," Kershaw reaches to the deepest edge of his vocal range as he contemplates selling off the property of a broken marriage--"sortin' through what's left of you and me." "Haunted Heart" is literally that, a ghostly love story in which the ghost is not a former resident of someone's house, but a former owner of someone's heart. With harmonica, blaring steel guitar and a deep-South vocal twang, Kershaw and his band haunt the song themselves with the ghosts of country and blues past.
