Publisher's note

The legendary funk, soul, and jazz musician who played with James Brown moves from sideman to center stage in this loving tribute to a seminal but often overlooked force in American music. (Performing Arts)

Annotation

Fred Wesley's trombone was a signature part of the James Brown sound between the years 1968 and 1975: the bandleader's familiar exhortation, "Hit me, Fred," becomes the title of Wesley's autobiography, which depicts a career spent charting horn lines behind some of the funkier outfits in the annals of 20th century R&B. Born in Mobile, Alabama, Wesley originally studied piano in his childhood, switching to trombone to play in the family band. Although he still possesses a strong affinity for jazz (he played for a while with Count Basie), his first significant professional gig was with the high-energy Ike and Tina Turner R&B revue. In HIT ME, FRED, he recounts his years with the mercurial, demanding Brown, who insisted on both musical and sartorial excellence, and his later liberating musical experiences with the psychedelically inclined R&B performers Bootsy Collins and George Clinton, both the complete opposites of the disciplinarian Godfather of Soul. In addition, he recalls his harrowing struggles with drug addiction and the vicissitudes of a touring musician's career. HIT ME, FRED is a rare insider's look at the life and often hardscrabble times of a legendary R&B musician.
