This is part of Chess Records' 50th Anniversary series.

Most of the material here was recorded between 1950 and 1952, about half of it for release as singles and the balance for LPs like JOHN LEE HOOKER PLAYS AND SINGS THE BLUES. Hooker's dark, foot--stomping one chord vamps were a hit with postwar urban listeners who, like Hooker, had migrated during World War Two from the rural South to find work in the North. "Walkin' The Boogie," included here, is one of several thinly-veiled rewrites of his 1948 debut hit "Boogie Chillun" Hooker would record. True to Delta form, most of the 50s cuts here are just guitar and voice, but Hooker's joined for two tunes by guitarist Eddie Kirkland and "Blues For Big Town" has Bob Thurman on piano. HIS BEST CHESS SIDES also includes four tunes from 1966, two from THE REAL FOLK BLUES (one solo, one band) and two singles recorded with a band.
