Title Note

Lanterna: Henry Frayne (vocals, guitar); Eric Gebow (drums); Mike Brosco (sound effects).

Recorded at Waterworks Audio, Champaign, Illinois.

Henry Frayne's project, Lanterna, shows what can happen when a creative guitarist takes advantage of modern recording technology. When listening to HIGHWAYS, one gets a sense of all the wonderful sounds and textures the guitar can generate. Much of this is due to Frayne's knack for multi-tracking. When combined, the ambient qualities of this music become apparent as the guitar layers create a finely woven blanket of sound. However, when looking at its parts, this album is best described as an amalgam of rock, folk, and light jazz.

Backed by drums and bass on several of these tracks, Frayne's music is polished and tightly arranged. The guitar technique used on "Brightness" recalls the work of U2's guitarist the Edge, while the subtle "Seasons" brings to mind the atmospheric tapestries of David Sylvian. In contrast, the acoustic guitar-driven "Adriatic" is reminiscent of Pat Metheny's more folky music. This reflective and serene tune overflows with bright musical colors and vast harmonic expansions. Overall, Frayne's travel metaphor evokes driving along a desolate, wind-swept road. In then end, HIGHWAYS could be seen as a travelogue to an ever-unfolding, dazzling musical dream.
