Product note

HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE PLUGGED NICKEL is compiled from the eight-disc THE COMPLETE LIVE AT THE PLUGGED NICKEL 1965 box set.
Personnel: Miles Davis (trumpet); Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone); Herbie Hancock (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Tony Williams (drums).
Producer: Teo Macero.
Reissue producer: Michael Cuscuna.
Recorded live at The Plugged Nickel, Chicago, Illinois on December 22 & 23, 1965. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
Digitally remastered by Deborah Parkinson.
Highlights aren't a bad idea--there's plenty to think about in the six cuts here, and the complete "Plugged Nickel" boxed set runs to a total of eight discs. Among other things, Miles live in 1965 epitomized as much as ever the jazz truism that it isn't what you do, it's the way that you do it. While this was his "second classic quintet," with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter and Tony Williams, Miles drew freely from the past ten years of his repertoire. Davis had first recorded both "Walkin'" and "'Round About Midnight" more than ten years earlier, and "So What" was effectively the signature piece from 1959's KIND OF BLUE. And yet the versions here are every bit as open and impressionistic as you would expect; compared to the abstractions of this quintet, the music on KIND OF BLUE sounds practically downhome by comparison. The recording quality is immaculate and an essay by Bob Blumenthal provides a detailed, tune--by--tune critique. Miles's artistic development has always been delineated and discussed in terms of each successive ensemble or album, and these recordings are an integral part of that discussion.
