Del McCoury Artist Snapshot:

Singer/mandolinist Del McCoury's career had the most auspicious beginning a bluegrass musician can hope for; in the mid-1960s he was a member of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. He kicked off his solo career a couple of years later, and by the '70s he had found a middle ground between bluegrass traditionalism and the open-minded "newgrass" approach, becoming a highly influential artist in the process. In the '80s, McCoury truly codified his style, forming a tight band that included his sons Ronnie and Rob. THE MOUNTAIN, their 1999 collaboration with Steve Earle, raised the band's profile even further, endearing them to non-country audiences and neatly dovetailing with the early-2000s O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?-inspired bluegrass resurgence.

Title Note

Del McCoury & The Dixie Pals: Del McCoury (vocals, guitar); Bill Runkle (vocals, banjo); Dick Staber (vocals, mandolin); Bill Sage (vocals, fiddle); Jerry McCoury (vocals, bass).

Recorded at Urban Recordings, Bethseda, Maryland in August 1972.

This 1972 Rounder release is vintage Del McCoury. Rawer and earthier than some of his later releases, HIGH ON A MOUNTAIN still contains all the precise, top-shelf musicianship fans have come to expect from the bluegrass artist. His group here, the Dixie Pals, lend a crisp, full sound to the outing, and McCoury is in fine voice throughout.

McCoury has been credited with revitalizing the genre of traditional bluegrass by introducing outside influences into the music, and that claim is substantiated here to a degree. Yet this is fiddle, banjo, and guitar music in the classic mold, and McCoury's voice has the high lonesome sound that old-school bluegrass fans love. That voice, along with a true sense of musical sophistication, makes HIGH ON A MOUNTAIN a traditional bluegrass classic.
