Product note

Prior to the Monterey Pop Festival, Jefferson Airplane had a pair of hits that made them poster children for the Haight-As bury scene, yet the world outside of San Francisco was still unaware of their reputation as a live band. HIGH FLYING BIRD: LIVE AT THE MONTEREY FESTIVAL captures that infamous set on disc and is an excellent document of a ferocious live band at their peak. Although the set has been released before--by Magnum in 1995 and Falcone in 2005--this is the superior version thanks to an extended set list and sound quality that far outshines the others.
Marty Balin and Grace Slick's frayed harmonies are as evocative a representation of the confused tenderness and chaos of the love generation as any, and Paul Kantner and Jorma Kaukonen's jangly-meets-jagged interwoven leads lay their claim to the best live twin guitar tandem in San Francisco (apologies to Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir). If there remains any doubt about this last point, see "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil," a feedback drenched guitar rave that sets the stage for Hendrix's debut the following day. Other highlights of the set include a blistering cover of Fred Neil's "Other Side of this Life" and the SURREALISTIC PILLOW deep cut "She Has Funny Cars."
