Title Note

Most hard rock supergroups that appeared during the late '80s/early '90s are best forgotten and/or too reflective of the then-thriving hair metal scene (Bad English, Contraband, etc.), but Damn Yankees were an exception. Led by a pair of notable songwriters who obviously studied their Beatles records (Styx's Tommy Shaw and Night Ranger's Jack Blades) and one of rock's wildest guitarists (Ted Nugent), the group was a cut above the rest of the pre-Nirvana mainstream rock acts, as evidenced by the ten-track collection High Enough and Other Hits. Expectedly, Shaw and Blades (whose vocal harmonies are quite exceptional) represented the "melody," while Nugent represented the blaring hard rock, as evidenced by such rockers as "Coming of Age" and "Don't Tread On Me," the hit ballads "High Enough" and "Where You Goin' Now," as well as "Come Again," a track that slowly gains momentum before leading to a fantastic Nugent solo. While some may argue that a band that lasted for a total of only two albums may not exactly warrant a career overview, all the expected favorites are included here, and at a budget price, this may be all the Damn Yankees you'll need. ~ Greg Prato
