Title Note

This 24-song compilation isn't exactly comprehensive, jumping over Hi records' first success, Carl McVoy's 1957 rockabilly single "Tootsie" b/w "You Are My Sunshine," to start with Bill Black's Combo and Ace Cannon, and then moving on to Murray Kellum's goofy "Long Tall Texan," roots rock legend Gene Simmons (perhaps better identified as Jumpin' Gene Simmons) with "Haunted House," and Charlie Rich. From there, it's on to more familiar names such as Willie Mitchell, Ann Peebles, Al Green, Otis Clay, et al., and the soul sounds for which Hi became known at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s. Sandwiched between those two sides of the label's history is Jerry Jaye's "My Girl Josephine," a piece of rockabilly that was ten years out of its time and still managed to make the Top 30, with a sound that Creedence Clearwater Revival would soon perfect. The mastering is excellent, even for a release going back to 1989; the combination of sounds is as fascinating as the songs are extraordinary; and only the somewhat unfocused annotation is a slight disappointment. ~ Bruce Eder
