The likes of Coldplay may have supplanted James as the vanguard in big, bold, brightly produced Britrock, but HEY MA deserves a place on the mantle of what still excites listeners from overseas. This is a record dominated by huge anthems for the disaffected, and rallying cries for the wayward individual. Things start off on a particularly robust note however, as "Bubbles" and "Hey Ma" soar from their opening moments, with Tim Booth still displaying the singalong knack that garnered James international fame on LAID, while the rest of the boys jettison off into layers of reverb and transcendent shimmer. It all concludes fittingly with the aptly titled "I Wanna Go Home," which gradually rises in urgency over three minutes before closing HEY MA in a liberated fervor.
