Title Note

Personnel includes: Bruce Channel (vocals); Bob Jones, Billy Sanders (guitar); Delbert McClinton (harmonica); Jim Rogers (bass); Ray Torres (drums).

Recorded in 1961.

Includes liner notes by Mark Marymont.

There are few sounds in rock & roll as plaintive as Delbert McClinton's opening harmonica riff on "Hey! Baby," with the possible exception of Bruce Channel's vocal, which soon takes over. Channel is poised on the edge of a romantic encounter throughout the song, but given the underlying tone of bittersweetness, you can't help but think he's on his way to Heartbreak Hotel. This notion is certainly borne out elsewhere, as on the girl-group torch song "Baby It's You" and the deceptively uptempo lonesome-blues lament "Ain't Got No Home" made famous by Clarence "Frogman" Henry. Even when Channel closes the album with the everything's-cool declaration of the bonus track "Mine Exclusively," there's that forlorn harmonica wail again, bringing out the lonely tinge in a voice that was clearly born for the blues.
