Review

Mixmag (2/99, p.105) - 5 stars out of 5 - "...an unreleased gem from 1975....snatches of melody adrift on a sea of hypnotic rhythm, both haunting and beautifully soothing....the original chill-out music..."

Title Note

All tracks mixed by King Tubby.

Personnel: Tony Brevett, Ruth Brevett (vocals); Ernest Ranglin (guitar); Tommy McCook (flute, tenor saxophone); Roland Alphonso (alto saxophone); Lester Sterling (tenor saxophone); Don D. Junior (trombone); Augustus Pablo

(Clavinet, keyboards); Jackie Mittoo (keyboards); Lloyd Brevett (acoustic

bass, congas, percussion); Benbow, Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Lloyd Knibbs (drums); Ras Michael (congas, percussion).

Engineers: Errol T., Herman Chin Loy, Maurice Sullivan.

Recorded at Aquarius, Joe Gibbs' Studio & Studio One, Kingston, Jamaica in 1975. Includes liner notes by Geoff Parker.

It's really not entirely fair to call this a Skatalites album, as bassist Lloyd Brevett and tenor saxophonist Tommy McCook, who co-wrote and produced the set, are the only members of the legendary band who play on all 9 tracks. Originally recorded in 1975 and first released as the white-label HERB DUB COLLIE DUB on the obscure Jigsaw label, this is pure '70s-style dub reggae. Not the sound-effect-laden trippy dub of Lee Scratch Perry, but the more meditative, jazzier style of Burning Spear's contemporaneous GARVEY'S GHOST or the early work of Augustus Pablo, who plays keyboards--but not his signature melodica--here. The other key guest is Ras Michael, whose rattlesnake percussion gives the tracks a hypnotic, mysterious feel. Highlights include the sanctified "Close to Jah" and the slinky "Dub of Love." Terrific stuff, but be warned: this is not a ska album.
