Review

Spin (p.86) - "The duo's lilting version of 'My Friend the Sun,' originally by the late-'60s/early-'70s British art-rock band Family, has the jingle-jangle shimmer of a lost Beatles single..."

Title Note

Personnel: Chris Stamey (vocals); Peter Holsapple (vocals).

Audio Mixers: Chris Stamey; John Plymale; Tim Harper; Wes Lachot.

Arrangers: Chris Stamey; Peter Holsapple.

Peter Holsapple and Chris Stamey were not only the twin anchors of power-pop juggernauts the dBs, but have since made terrific solo albums and played with other acts. Song for song, this 2009 release is on par with the duo's classic MAVERICKS album. HERE AND NOW seems to issue from an alternate universe where it's always 1990, where songs with wall-to-wall hooks and heavenly harmonies are the norm, and singer-songwriters are educated at the knee of Mike Nesmith and Paul McCartney.

The pair stick to what they are good at: suspended-fourth folk-rock ("My Friend the Sun"), Everly Brothers-esque close harmonies ("Early in the Morning"), early-'60s rockers ("Widescreen World"), and bouncy twangfests ("Some of the Parts"). Refreshingly, all the throwbacks don't add up to empty nostalgia. Indeed, the guys seem as if they are having the time of their lives--right here and now.
