In the opening bars of his second record, HELL AND BACK, Ruff Ryders crew member Drag-On boasts than he's "here to perfect rap." Although he might not literally come through on such claims, he soon drops a line like "my songs are deeper than death itself," followed by some similarly dark and off-beat musings, showing that he possesses a certain right to his cockiness.

Drag-On's languid drawl, raw fury, and unconventional phrasing has earned him frequent comparisons to his mentor DMX, but on closer inspection, his less gruff delivery and more nuanced lyrics prove the young rapper operates outside the big dog's shadow. On this collection, he shows his ability to hit hard as on "Feel My Pain" or playful, as on the colorful grammar of "Bang Bang Boom," featuring a solid turn by Swizz Beatz. Through the course of the album, almost the whole Ruff Ryder family (including DMX) drops by, with Drag-On bringing out the best in his collaborators in each case. HELL AND BACK certainly doesn't reinvent rap, but it does showcase the coming of age of a sharp and unusual MC.
