Review

Uncut (p.114) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he reverb-drenched Sun sound has been lovingly approximated in clean, simple style along with its lyrics' delinquent disaffection."

Title Note

Heavy Trash: Jon Spencer, Matt Verta-Ray (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, baritone guitar, organ, bass guitar, drums).

Additional personnel: John Graboff (pedal steel guitar); Lily Wolfe (Wurlitzer piano); Daniel Collas (organ); Paul Dugan, Michael Stewart (double bass); Ron Salvo (drums, percussion, background vocals); Dave Varenka, Phil Hernandez, Marcus Farrar, Tam Ui (drums); Carrie Straus (maracas); Jon Free, Simon (percussion, background vocals); Meg Free, Daniel Jodoci (percussion); Ali Smith, Christina Campanella, Emily Helming, Chris Lee (background vocals).

Recording information: New York, New York (2004).

Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray, of Blues Explosion and Speedball Baby, respectively, teamed up to cut a record as Heavy Trash, a project that brings a contemporary twist to the sound of classic rockabilly. There is little evidence of the distortion-heavy noise-rock of either member's main outfit here, yet there is a fair bit of sleazy punk attitude, evident in the songs' amped-up swagger and suggestive lyrics. The result sounds like what Sun Studios might have produced had it been located on New York City's Lower East Side in the 1980s.

This is a world of stripped-down boogie-blues progressions, chugging drum beats, twangy vocals, and tremolo-heavy guitar solos. Spencer handles the vocal duties, and his blustery croons and wails are remarkably well suited to traditional rock & roll. "Justine Alright," "Gatorade," and "The Hump" motor along with immediately catchy hooks, while the creepy "Under the Waves" is a murder ballad complete with wiry guitar lines a la the Shadows. Heavy Trash wraps the whole package with enough tongue-in-cheek attitude and style to provide a potent dose of old-fashioned rock & roll fun.
