Released in 1983, the debut album from thrash metal pioneers Exciter puts them in league with then-emerging contemporaries Metallica and Slayer. While Exciter may not be on a par with those giants, HEAVY METAL MANIAC packs plenty of punch, mercilessly ripping through a brutal set of songs. Exciter's love of Judas Priest and Motorhead is clear, but the raw energy of the album, deepened by speed, ferocious distortion, and roughshod production values, is original and striking. HEAVY METAL MANIAC is an overlooked jewel in the speed metal catalogue.
