Heaven'z Movie (EXPLICIT) (CD)

Bizzy Bone (born Byron Anthony McCane II), best known for his tenure with the Cleveland hip-hop outfit Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, has lead an active solo career since the late 1990s. His first solo release, HEAVEN'Z MOVIE, reflected a more eclectic, experimental take on Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's R&B-laced rap. Bizzy continued to explore new musical and personal directions on albums such as 2001's THE GIFT, and 2005's SPEAKING IN TONGUES. An appearance on the television program AMERICA'S MOST WANTED and self-instigated rumors that he was homeless raised controversy, but it didn't slow Bizzy's steady stream of releases. He has reunited with old bandmate Layzie Bone to record two albums under the name THE BONE BROTHERS.

One of the first signs that HEAVEN'Z MOVIE isn't your run-of-the-mill hip-hop album is the simple fact that Bizzy Bone's lyrics are faithfully reproduced in the CD booklet, printed lyrics being virtually unheard of on hip-hop recordings. The next clue is the rich musical palette the songs draw on; everything from "When Doves Cry" to Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata" is transmogrified here, in the service of an elaborate production that still doesn't sacrifice danceability for creativity. While the song subjects may not break any new ground, covering the usual urban mise-en-scene, the vocal delivery of these tried-and-true hip-hop plaints is uncommonly distinctive. The words rush at the listener at a breakneck pace, but Bizzy Bone eschews the brutality and incomprehensibility of mile-a-minute rappers like Onyx, opting instead for a Snoop Dogg-ish lilt and swing to the lyrical flow.
