Review

Magnet (6-7/00, pp.83-4) - "...Packs catchy licks into a steady dose of melodic post-punk....making considerable headway in both clean production and coherent songwriting....[They] continue to write exciting songs that always hit the danceable meter."
NME (Magazine) (4/1/00, p.34) - 7 out of 10 - "...Emocore breakdown, precise control-freak dynamics unable to disguise emotions spinning like plates....Oddly accessible....their own personal purgatory is looking good."

Title Note

The Lapse: Chris Leo, Toko Yasuda.

This band is comprised simply of Chris Leo and Tokyo Yasuda. It was formed out of the ashes of their previous outfit, Van Pelt. The 10 songs run the gamut from sonic experimentation to jagged and hook-filled pop. Throughout, it feels homespun and completely organic, as one song rolls into the next, loud replacing soft, or dense replacing sparse. The opening "Buffet" comes roaring in with a sassy guitar hook that aligns the Lapse with Guided By Voices, but it's dogged relentlessness gives them a totally different modernist slant. Singing "We make meals out of condiments," they offer a metaphor for their own D.I.Y. aesthetic and working habits.

The pair's contrasting vocals allow for a bracing range of possibilities as well. When Tokyo's voice enters the guitar-driven rhythmic bed of "S.O.S.," she adds a contrasting softness to the metal jangle. They move easily from Beefheart-like angularity ("Basilico Basilica") to folkish quietude ("I Vow For Now"). As such, this album offers a well-balanced diet.
