Review

Magnet (p.88) - "[I]ts brooding mood-country brings to mind new-moon Yosemite campfires more than bright Santa Monica sunlight. The largely low-key and heartsick HEARTS could easily serve as the score to an old Hollywood Western."
No Depression (p.118) - "On HEARTS, the nimble veteran quartet continues to defy genres and styles, creating a patchwork of memorable songs that buzz, jangle, and slither all over the map."

Product note

Personnel: Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar); Scott Hirsch (electric guitar, ukulele, organ, Farfisa, drum programming); Carr (bass guitar); Kim (tambourine); Inara George, Paul Hoaglin (background vocals).
Additional personnel: Jason Molina.
On their fourth full-length album, HEARTS, The Court & Spark have pared down their unique alt-country sound to its lovely essence. The sparse, varied orchestration hovers in vast spaces, causing every steel-pedal note, every piano run, and every plucked banjo string to stand out against a void. It creates a wonderfully delicate tension in these slow-footed country songs--songs that are drowsy from the Western sunlight and lightly dusted with AM gold.
"Birmingham to Blackhorse Road We Wandered" begins with lushly cinematic horns and organ tones that could come from the soundtrack to a spaghetti western, but which suddenly seem lost and amorphous when frontman MC Taylor begins to sing. Another standout track is "Your Mother Was Lightning," a bass-driven barroom vamp with a kind of dueling-pianos solo featuring piano and organ. The restraint shown on HEARTS is hypnotic and haunting by turns, and the result is one of The Court & Spark's best albums.
