Review

Mojo (Publisher) (12/03, p.120) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he hip-twanging 'Rockabilly Fever' keeps the faith admirably. The spirit is with her."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Wanda Jackson (vocals); Elvis Costello (vocals, acoustic guitar); Rosie Flores (vocals); Smokey Hormel (guitar, mandolin); Dave Alvin (guitar); Larry Taylor (bass); Stephen Hodges (drums); The Cramps; The Cadillac Angels.

Recorded at the Steakhouse, North Hollywood, California.

While there were (and are) many powerful, robust female blues singers, Wanda Jackson was one of the very first women to rock out--in the mid-1950s, in fact, she was a sort of female counterpart to Elvis Presley. Like Elvis, her roots were in country and gospel, and also like him, she was drawn to the strange, feral rumblings that would be known as rock & roll. The '60s saw Jackson transitioned into country, gospel, and then retirement--but in the '90s, she returned to the sound that put her on the map.

HEART TROUBLE finds Jackson's sassy, irrepressible Southern-accented voice intact--a little deeper, but earthy, rich, and still rollicking. On this set, Jackson is joined by a few fans who count her as an important influence--Dave Alvin, Rosie Flores, Elvis Costello, the Stray Cats' Lee Rocker, and "psychobilly" combo the Cramps. But make no mistake, this is Jackson's show all the way, whether she's applying that singular voice to R&B/gospel balladry ("Walk with Me"), honky-tonk country ("It'll Be Me," "Crying Time"), or her ripping original rockabilly hits revisited ("Let's Have a Party," "Mean Mean Man").
