In this insightful personal account, veteran Max Cleland tells how he wound up in Walter Reed Medical Center for a second time--he had been confined there years earlier after returning from Vietnam a triple amputee due to a grenade explosion. On his first experience at Walter Reed, he found the strength and inspiration to carry on, and his career included a stint as head of the Veteran's Administration and later as a U. S. senator from Georgia. Some time after his difficult vote in favor of going into Iraq, his personal and public life took a severe downturn, as he was hounded out of office and developed post-traumatic stress disorder.

Cleland is a fighter, and he finds, in his second tour at Walter Reed, that the company of veterans--this time from Afghanistan and Iraq--provide a solid grounding and the encouragement he needs to carry on. He writes candidly of his physical difficulties and his rehabilitation, and he writes eloquently on how President Bush's war in Iraq seemed similar to President Johnson's war in Vietnam. The personal cost of war on the patriotic soldiers and their families comes through as does his undying love for his country and his strong message to always carry on.
